ARI Ireland manages the travel retail operations at Ireland’s three largest airports Dublin, Cork and Shannon. These airports are owned and operated by ARI’s parent company, DAA.
ARI Ireland is the company’s longest-established business – airport duty free was invented at Shannon Airport in 1947 - and remains one of its largest in terms of turnover.
Total retail sales, including those of over 50 concessionaries, amounted to €221 million across the three airports in 2010.
Approximately 300 people are directly employed by ARI Ireland.
Duty-paid sales comprise approximately 60% of ARI Ireland’s revenues. Perfumes and cosmetics represent over 50% of total sales followed in descending order of scale by alcohol, fashion and souvenirs, confectionary and food, and tobacco.
The opening of Dublin Airport’s Terminal 2 in November 2010 increased the total retail space at the airport to just under 20,000 sq metres.
ARI’s own dynamic retail brand 'The Loop' emanated from customer insights at Dublin Airport and was launched there to significant customer acclaim in 2009.
The exciting new retail experience on offer in Terminal 2 helped Dublin Airport achieve first place in Airport Council International’s (ACI) rankings for shopping facilities at European airports in late 2010.
There were further awards in 2011. One of the unique features of The Loop at Dublin Airport, the Irish Whiskey Collection won the Speciality Concept of the Year at the 2011 Frontier Awards in Cannes.
The Irish Whiskey Collection brings together the largest single retail collection of Irish whiskeys anywhere in the world with over 125 different labels. Customers have responded enthusiastically to this innovation with Irish whiskey sales rising by more than 30% since the opening of the shop in Terminal 2 in 2010.
Up to 3,000 sq metres of exciting new retail space was brought on stream with the opening of Cork Airport’s new passenger terminal in 2006. Like its sister airports at Dublin and Shannon, Cork now offers 'The Loop' retail brand. A new speciality food hall, reflecting the Cork region’s reputation as the gourmet capital of Ireland, is currently planned.
Following a €1 million investment by ARI Ireland in late 2011, the spiritual home of airport shopping has been significantly enhanced.
The bright new 900 sq metre airside space incorporates an upgraded perfume and cosmetics offering, a new Irish Whiskey Collection, a Memories Irish souvenir outlet and an exciting giftware store operated by concessionaires, Glenaran. The retail experience also includes a dedicated Irish food area offering local artisan products.
